I am honored to be speaking at the Remnants of the Past show this weekend. It is such an honor because I have such respect for the designers, dealers, and display people at the show and in this field.
They are my people -- the readers and stylists that I try to reach with my blog posts, books, and magazines. It is heartwarming, really, because there is never any place I feel more at home than in this group of kindred spirits. And that sentiment goes beyond just the people. The spirit and vibe comes from the objects, too. It is part of the fabric of collecting and designing that these storied pieces speak of the artists who made them, and the owners that loved and cherished them.
The things that I collect speak to me -- tell me their stories, where they have been and where they have come from, and how they were adored and prized. It is a sentiment that we must learn to hold on to and pass on in this modern world...teach our children to "take stock" and admire the things and people and community that have come before us. I love the things that I have gathered. I walk by my collections and smile and remember and plan my moments, hours, and celebrations ahead. I am inspired by everything, and I look for the beauty and quality in every object, and study and smile and study some more.
And I love to share: the stories that these items so freely tell through styling, gathering, photographing, recording. I look forward to sharing these sentiments with the folks at the show and engaging and experiencing every little detail. I'll look for the passion in the eyes of the dealers and find some new luminaries to share with all of you in upcoming magazines.
This show gives me hope...of new ideas and relationships. The future is bright and it is all because of the ability to savor the "remnants of the past."
I hope to see you there!
