A Halloween Giveaway!!

Win this set of Halloween horns pictured on page 22 of AUTUMN with Matthew Mead!

Have your thoughts turned to Halloween yet?

Are you eyeing the pumpkins at your local grocer's or farm stands...wondering if it is too early to pitch the flowers from your window boxes and tuck in fall leaves and gourds?
Have your children begun to chatter about their Halloween costumes yet?

Ready or not, the seasonal aisles of our local department stores have embraced Halloween, loading their shelves with plastic pumpkins, masks, candy, and skeletons.

But we know you want more.

For those who take a vintage twist on Halloween, papier maché folk artist Johanna Parker, who contributed a fun Halloween story for our AUTUMN issue, has also offered our readers the chance to win this set of Halloween horns from her collection:
They are new, vintage inspired tin horns from the 2011 Johanna Parker Collection offered by Bethany Lowe Designs. They feature Johanna's whimsical illustrations ~ an owl on one and a dancing cat on the other.  They are 13" tall and made of tin and paper.
**The horns photographed in the magazine are the exact pair offered in the giveaway.

You can see more of Johanna's Halloween style in the pages of AUTUMN. Simply buy your copy here, but don't forget to enter our give-away first!
Leave a comment telling us when you begin decorating for Halloween and whether you go all out or take the minimalist route.

***(And, of course, extra entries can be earned by tweeting, posting on Facebook, or sharing about the contest on your blog. But be sure to tell us if you did the extra work!)

    Love the horns.

  3. I'm always thinking about Halloween, whether I'm keeping watch for decorations for the children's party at church, or for my own home.

I used to decorate to the hilt for Halloween, but now that the kids are all but gone I tend to stick with one table in the entry, plus pumpkins and gourds outside. Around here we are fortunate to have the bumpy green hedge balls which look awesome with orange pumpkins.

  4. My daughter asked if we could decorate for Halloween yesterday (we didn't). Beginning or mid October is usually when we get out Halloween box and decorate, although this year maybe earlier :)

  5. I am starting to decorate for fall right now. Halloween in a couple of weeks. It is such a fun holiday. I love how the children really adore this day.

  6. Love these horns and Johanna's art in general. Being from Maine, our family has already put out pumpkins because fall is in the air. We go all out for Halloween because my three young kids just love the season!

  7. I usually don't start decorating until the very end of September. The last couple years, since I've been inspired by other bloggers, I have gone over the top with my fall/Halloween decorating. I love it! I just got my magazine yesterday and I LOVE these horns.

  8. I am always thinking about Halloween because I live it 365 days a year creating fall and Halloween themed pieces.
Thanks very much for the opportunity to win these gorgeous horns by Johanna!
Looking forward to receiving my copy of AUTUMN too!!

  10. I start the last week of September after all the birthdays are over, I use to for years start the first of September and do the whole house and my family got after me to tone it down....I like quality timeless Halloween pieces not the cheesy stuff!

    ReplyDelete
  11. I begin usually about the second week of October. There are other events in the family just before that and I want to give them the attention that I feel those events deserve and then I will put out the items and the decor that I have that relate to Halloween.

  14. Last Saturday the markets here in Vers Pont du Gard had the first sign of the orange of Autumn...the pumpkin. Yes, arriving in the states before the holiday, orange will dominate every corner of the house. The horns, a welcome addition.

  19. I would love to win these!!! I have slowly started decorating by putting out my Autumn decorations frist{apples, leaves, sunflowers} and than about the last week in September I transition into vintage Halloween. This year I am decorating with Matthew Meads free Halloween clipart I saved from last year!

I posted the give away on our blog:

  24. Halloween is my most favorite time of year! I adore the horns and Johanna's work. Actually, I leave some of my halloween decorations all year long, in my studio. I just can't part with them during the year.

I start decorating about this time of year. This year I am a bit behind due to my studies in college. I hope to start this week and of course, I go all out! That is the only way to decorate for Halloween.

  27. I live in the desert, where the weather is still over 100 degrees in September and October. My family owns a ranch in the Northern part of the state and every year after Round up in October, I make my husband drive to the forest, to pick up some branches with fall leaves and that is when all my fall/Halloween stuff comes out of the closet.

It is my favorite holiday! When I have everything in place, people who visit my house say it looks like a boo-tique! I have one piece of Johanna and it is always in a place of prominence so it can be shown off!

  41. It has been the hottest summer for us in Illinois. I am sick of grasshoppers eating my plants, dry grass and unbearable heat. Bring on Fall...I am waiting with baited breath to empty window boxes and fill with gourds pumpkins and leaves. Oh to have clear blue skies, and a nip in the air. Stephanie

  42. Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year-- so much so that I have a few Halloween decorations that I leave out year round. My favorite items are vintage tin horns and papier mache.

  43. The fall - specifically halloween! - is my favorite time of year for decorating! When my kids were younger, we went full force with all the scary/creepy/cheesy halloween stuff, but as they get older and have "outgrown" the kid stuff, I've gradually replaced the decor with a more sophisticated yet vintagey vibe, and love, love, LOVE Johanna Parker's paper mache goodies! 47. We begin decorating our house for Halloween usually right after "Back to school". We pull out tote after tote of orange and black goodies to fill our shelves and mantles. But we also have a vintage Halloween basement that stays decorated with plenty of original and reproduction vintage pieces. It makes me happy to be able to go down in our Halloween basement in June or July and see plenty of wonderful Halloween trinkets sitting out. It warms my heart...well, cools my heart is more accurate. :)

  48. I start the last weekend of September, as I'm always a bit reluctant to let summer go. Also, I live in a desert community where we have summer temps until November! I'm an all out decorator - inside the house and out!

  64. I LOVE HALLOWEEN! Have already started my decorating. I do A LOT, so it takes quite a bit of time to get it all done. 67. Not all out this year but not minimalist either. We're off to the beach cottage for a while and won't return in time to be over the top. Three small trees are up and the front porch is done. I don't think I'll do the huge spider webs this year and the large creepy tree is at risk. Toot, toot! Halloween's a comin'!!

  76. I try to wait until October, which is a provably bad idea because I always wind up scrambling & sucking coffee in order to get the final touches up the night before before my Halloween party.

  77. I pretty much start thinking about the next Halloween as soon as I'm done cleaning up from the current one. Right now I'm making dolls & some are all dressed up for Halloween. I *LOVE* Johanna Parker's art, thanks for the great giveaway!

  81. On any given day you can find tucked away in some corner of a room in my home, a fanciful mix of vintage and current holiday decor comingling in festive vignettes. I find that some of the classic Halloween art pieces are just too wonderful to store away for the better part of the year. Come September my candlelit home glimmers like a giant Jack o Lantern. Your inspirational and timeless holiday magazines are a decorators dream :) What a treat to see Johanna and her whimsical creations featured in Autumn. She's such a gifted artist and a real sweet lady.

  87. I actually keep a lot of Halloween pieces out year-round, but only the art pieces that I have from other artists, and a few of my own. When I start decorating seriously for the season, I start some time in mid August, because I have a huge party for halloween, and decorate my woods, even. It takes at least two months to get all that set up, and almost as much time getting it back down. There have been a few years when winter came early and stayed around, so I had zombies and odd creatures in my woods until spring. These horns would rate a year-round place in my dining room. Thanks for the chance to win them!

Oh, sure thing that I have already started with Halloween projects. :) So far only two self-made Halloween cards are hanging in my study, but soon enough my whole place will be decorated for Halloween -- a little bit here, a little bit there. Considering that I live in a country where many people don't even know about Halloween, that's definitely a lot! :) Thanks to Johanna for offering such great prizes.

  93. I bleed orange all year long! Hallowe'en is my favorite season (yes, I did say season), and I start REALLY decorating in September. I have some decorations that stay out all year because they add to the apothecary feel in my home, but I pull out all the big guns in mid September, usually before the 16th, which is my birthday. I go all out, every year. I want to do a yard haunt, but not sure if I'm up to all the work and heartache that goes into a successful haunt.
LOVE the horns and would be thrilled to make them part of my seasonal display! Thanks for the chance to win!

  102. I started decorating for Halloween about 5 or 6 years ago. I usually only do a tree (two last year and two planned for this year!) and a few other decorations like a banner or such because the costume is what's most important! I'm changing my blog entry to tell about the contest (just adding to the sidebar I already have on these horns and your Autumn magazine. This year I'm taking a more "elegant" approach to Halloween--for adults to appreciate! Thanks Matthew and Johanna!

  103. I go all out for Halloween. It is my favourite holiday. I start to decorate the last week of September with pumpkins and fall leaves. Because we have our Thanksgiving earlier in Canada after the first week of October the fall pumpkins become Jack-o-lanterns and all the ghost and goblins come out. I collect vintage Halloween pieces and constantly add every year. These horns would look wonderful with my collection.

    Thanks

  104. oh my! I would love to be entered...FALL is my favorite time of year!!! My taste is more primitive, but Have already started deocrating and I love all fall/halloween touch through out my home!! OLM

    ReplyDelete
  105. Kinda of depends on what else is going on! A less eventful year means fall decorating starts 1st week in Sept and Halloween gets brought in 1st week in October. This year, my daughter bought the house of her dreams (but it still needs lots of work!).... So I could be going minimalist!

  106. I just posted your Giveaway on my Blog! I'm very happy to let all my Blogger friends know about this lovely Giveaway.

  107. I love halloween! i have already decorated my entire house!

  108. I put off decorating for fall until the frost is on the pumpkins, but when I do, I go all out, so these horns would be fabulous in my decor.

  109. I'm so looking forward to getting the Autumn issue! I start decorating for Fall now and over the next month will add more items --- including Halloween decorations --- through October. Once Halloween is over, I remove the Halloween decorations and leave the fall items in place until I'm ready to start decorating for Christmas!!

    ReplyDelete
  110. LOVE the Autumn issue! :D I hope I win this giveaway.

  111. Absolutely adore Halloween! I'm already eyeing the merch on display in the stores. I don't start decorating until Oct - mainly because I take most of September cleaning in preparation. -.-;

Plugged your contest on both my Twitter: https://twitter.com/#!/jm_keating/status/113698981082710016

    And on my Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jenniferkeat/posts/1780194884056

  113. I start thinking about next halloween on Nov. 1st or sooner! It is my most favorite holiday and I go all out with decorations and costumes, I love dressing up! Last year I was a werewolf and used a full face prosthetic, so I'm hard core with halloween! I love the horns, especially because I have a black cat myself.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Great question! Halloween has been my favorite holiday since I was a child! I've collected Halloween items, both vintage and new, for years. September is definitely NOT too early to begin! And in all truth, there are some things I leave out year round! Thank you for the opportunity to win some of Johanna's wonderful work!

  116. I have begun thinking about Halloween! I love it! I'm still waiting for that 'one' awesome party though. I don't believe in decorating for holidays unless it's a month or less away. I'll probably begin sometime in early October.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I love Halloween, my birthday is Oct 30 so it has always been huge. However, my husband is a non-believer! So I do one room absolutle Halloween and the front door. The rest of the house is minimal but with 'spirit'. Would love to win the horns for my BD bash!

  118. Wow! The horns are cool. Going all out (for me) and starting my decorating this weekend!

  126. This will be my third and last entry in the drawing. I posted your site and Giveaway on my Facebook site (the other two were Blog and personal posts)

For Halloween, I use my two Matthew Mead Halloween Books to decorate and get ideas every year! I usually start on the first of October and haul out all my vintage inspired decor (I have it on the mantlepiece, tables and part of the counter. Also on my computer desk hutch). Then I start looking for recipes for my cookies! Love the Fall weather, especially since we had record-breaking heat for over two months this year!!

    ReplyDelete
  127. When I first begin to catch glimpses of Mums or the first pumpkin at the Farmer's Market (usually mid-end of August) my heart skips a beat! When my Birthday rolls around (Labor Day weekend) I KNOW it's time to begin with the Autumn decorating ~ Mums, grasses, gourds. I like the natural approach although with a 14 yr old son loving Halloween, the actual holiday takes a dramatic turn w/ cobwebs over my dying plants, lighting 'just so' to make it eerie & the bigger the jack-o-lantern to carve, the better! I guess we balance each other out! : )

  132. I can't resist getting or making more decorations every fall, and so the display, though small initially, is rapidly approaching "all out!" I make myself wait until the first weekend in October, but usually leave at least a few things on display until I pull out the Christmas tree!

    ReplyDelete
  133. I usually start decorating for fall and Halloween a out October 1st as I just want to hang on to summer as long as I can.

Each year I end up with more and more decorating. This year I'm thinking of starting to decorate early, maybe this week since we are having cooler weather.

    ReplyDelete
  134. I try my hardest to wait until October 1st, but I usually get too excited and start in September. I love vintage looking decorations and put them all around the house.

  144. I just came in from my garden and have picked some more zuchini and yellow crookneck squash. These squash scream fall and while I was picking them, I thought, "when my garden gets to this point is about the time when I start feeling all warm and fuzzy...I think it's time to go down and pull out my fall stuff!" And, I might add, that my pumpkin patch is sensational this year! I should have 15-20 very large pumpkins ready for picking in just a week or two. Thanks for the inspirational giveaway. Guess there's a certain magazine I need to collect...

    ReplyDelete
  145. I've already been making Halloween things such as needle felted pumpkins and hand dyed mohair artist bears.... but have only just started finding things for my own decorations.

    ReplyDelete
  146. As a Halloween artist, I'm always thinking Halloween but come September the Autumn decorations slowly begin to shift towards a more spooky feel as October draws near, with decorations to suit the more gentle All Hallow's Eve of days gone by that we remember as children.
Crossing my fingers for the giveaway! :-)

  158. I begin on Oct. 1st (though it's a struggle to stick to that and not start earlier!) and definitely go all out with the decorations - our whole neighborhood does (how cool is that?). The exterior as well as the entire lower floor gets the Halloween treatment: Spooky in the living room/dining room and fun and festive in the family room and kitchen area :)

  159. I begin decorating on October 1st. Our house is the most decorated house on our block. We decorate inside and out. We dress up, too. In September (or earlier, if the stores have their decorations out), we look for new treasures to buy and add to our collection.

Don't forget the pumpkin hunting and carving.

  165. Hello,
We go all out on decorating for our three favorite holidays, starting in May we decorate our home and porch in the finest patriotic trimmings around, Halloween and the fall season decorating begins on September 12th since 2001, we leave our patriotic decorations up until the day of remembrance for those lives lost when our nation was attacked on September 9, 2001. Then the funs comes of bringing down the multiple totes out of the attic and up from the basement that contain our fall and halloween decorations. We add new pieces each year to our collection of Halloween pieces. I love the look of the vintage Halloween images and pieces from the20s -60s. I do the inside decorating and my hubbie does the outside. Halloween decor comes down on Nov.1st each year and the fall items stay up until black Friday, then it is time to put up Christmas decor.
I have seen Joanne's work in Country Sampler magazine and so wished that I owned some of her art. Thank you so much for the chance to win and own a piece of her art.
    Happy Halloween,
    Lynn
