A HOLIDAY Birthday Bash...and a give-away!

Welcome to our virtual birthday party for the head of Holiday head-quarters, Matthew Mead.

Behold the invitation:

This little guy was born forty-two years ago today and I am fairly certain he looked at children's books a whole lot differently than you and I. The Little Engine That Could have been a little more vibrant on the page... The Cookie Monster who should have varied his diet more with the many recipes in the Joy of Cooking. Indeed, this little boy grew up to dream big and create beautiful books and magazines that we continue to marvel at and be inspired by.

But make no mistake: Matthew Mead takes his birthdays seriously!

According to his wife, Jenny: "I once gave Matthew a birthday card that said 'Buddha said to concentrate the mind on the present moment,' and Matthew replied, 'Yep, it's all about the presents!'

Well, something to that effect...but he loved it!

Matthew also has ingrained in him, from his father, that you have to have a birthday cake; ordering dessert while out to a birthday dinner does not suffice. Other things that don't cut it include: strawberry shortcake, tarts, tortes, and cupcakes. (We did do that one year and it was acceptable, but I wouldn't try it again..)."

Now, back to the party.
In addition to our beloved HOLIDAY readers, gathered round to help blow out the candles are:

(clockwise from top left: Matthew, Jenny, Sarah, Stacey and Linda)

And seated at the head of the table is Matthew's sidekick, Oscar:

And food, we are having food! (Made by Matthew, of course):

And besides a rousing game of  pass the hot sweet potato, we thought someone so high-maintenance might like a balloon launch:

And gifts, oh, the gifts! Since this is a virtual party, I am giving Matthew a trip somewhere warm, leaving on Tuesday. As for Jenny, she plans to take Matthew for a lovely dinner out and then return home to a Boston cream pie-like-cake and...ice cream.

(Matthew's second rule: there must be ice cream!!)

A gift from Stacey:
...And Sarah sends along a can of spray cheese and some Ritz crackers (inside joke!) and this special message.

Oh, and for those of you who dread turning another year older each birthday, Matthew has a slightly disturbing philosophy on age: he believes that, for example, he is really in his 43rd year. In other words, he is celebrating the end of his 42 year, not the beginning.

Picky, picky...
See what we have to put up with?

I think he is just trying to fast-track it to the seniors discount stage...
So, please join us in wishing Matthew a Happy Birthday!

Now for the give-away:

Because every birthday needs a parting gift, please leave a comment and we will enter you in a draw for a free copy of  HOLIDAY with Matthew Mead. And because we are feeling festive, if you are or become a follower, we will draw for another copy for those who fall into that group. So, be sure to tell us if you are (or become) a follower, and winners will be announced on Friday!

(contest is now closed!)

I think it all started with our class-long "all things orange" drawing session (with an orange pen, of course!) on my notebook. Early lessons in creative brainstorming! 31. Happy Birthday Matthew. My adopted son shares your sentiments about birthday cakes. He came to live with us at age 4. If someone asked him how old he was he would answer with, " I have had two birthday cakes." Confusing to others but we knew what he meant. It was like his life started over when he came to live with us.
So have a great day....eat cake all day, and of course, I am a follower. ((((HUGS)))
